37th WCIM, Prague, Czech Republic

The 37th WCIM, a joint meeting with CSIM and ISIM, was attended by approximately 3000 physicians and trainees from 87 countries. It had outstanding lectures from distinguished national and international faculty including a challenging keynote address, AI revolution in Medicine from Behshad Behzadi. Dr. Kolbe, President, Dr. Hood, president elect, Dr. Adri Kok, immediate past president and Lorenzo Diaz Salazar, executive committee member gave scientific presentations and Dr Kolbe and Dr. Hood along with Congress president Dr. Richard Ceska, made remarks at the opening and closing sessions. There was a joint session with ISIM, ACP and EBIM about the future of internal medicine and internal medicine education in Europe and US. Presentations were made by Dr. Kolbe, ISIM President, Dr. Opole, ACP Presidentand Dr. Reinhold Gans, EBIM. There were many oral and poster presentations made by trainees during the conference. We had almost 1,000 presentations. 546 posters were prepared mostly by young physicians.
ISIM’s booth attracted inquiries and exchanges from physicians and trainees from many countries, some of which had no national society as a member of ISIM.
Both the executive committee (EC) and general assembly met to do business. This consisted of thanking outgoing officers and members of EC, electing the new President-elect, Dr. Richard Ceska and two new members of EC, Dr. Frederik (Freek) C.J. Besters from South Africa, and Dr. Isaac O. Opole from USA. Two individuals were selected as honorary members in recognition of their outstanding and extensive contributions to ISIM, Dr. Adri Kok, immediate past president from South Africa and Dr. Claudia Arias, EC member from Dominican Republic.
The EC considered a proposal from McMaster University and MIRCIM to help distribute the McMaster Textbook of Internal Medicine, which is in hard copy and online and has Spanish and English versions with modifications adapted for regional populations using editorial assistance of local physician educators. Members of the EC agreed to help with this generous effort. Initial contacts will be made in Uganda and Kenya with the assistance of Dr. Ally Prebtani and Dr. Isaac Opole who have contacts in these countries and in Indonesia with the support of EC member Dr. Sally Nasution.
Reports for the upcoming 38th WCIM in Taipei, 2026 and 39th WCIM in Manilla, 2028 indicated arrangement were on track. Two excellent bids for 40th WCIM in 2030 were presented, one from the Emirates Society of Internal Medicine, and one from the Columbian Society of Internal Medicine. The Columbian bid was accepted.
