On the first evening of the 3-day conference, the opening ceremony was held between 7:00 and 9:00 PM. There was a procession of distinguished guests and council members to the accompaniment of traditional drumming. This was followed by lighting of the oil lamp, a college tradition, and welcome remarks by the President of SLCIM, Dr. Krishantha Jayasekera and President of ISIM, Dr. Virginia Hood. The program included remarks by the Minister for Health for Sri Lanka, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, who also received copies of audits compiled by SLCIM members about important public health problems in the country. This was followed by a keynote address by a distinguished Sri Lankan and international physician, H.M.M. Herath about the growing burden of diabetes, including normal weight diabetes, in Sri Lanka and the need to work on attitudes about these conditions as knowledge is good. Members who had recently published books or monographs were honored. The ceremony concluded with traditional Sri Lankan dances accompanied by Saxophone and violin performed for the audience. This was followed by a reception of Sri Lankan food and beverage. There were many photographs taken with the council members and other distinguished guests.

On the subsequent 2 full days, there were a series of 20–25-minute lectures, panels and symposia held throughout the day from 8 am to 5 pm. There was a poster competition for trainees and an oral presentation competition. Dr. Hood served as one of two judges for the 10 oral presentations given by Sri Lankan internists.  At lunch she met with attendees from Bangladesh College of Internal medicine and in the afternoon gave a lecture on “Stones, bones and metabolic syndrome “.  That evening the president's dinner was held where she again made remarks. All enjoyed good fellowship with dancing and good Sri Lankan food.

At the end of the second day, a Doctor’s Dilemma competition was held for trainees, and this was followed by the award ceremony being held.

Approximately 400 internal medicine physicians and trainees attended this 9th SIMCON. The program was well organized and covered diverse topics in internal medicine. Presentations were made by local and overseas experts including USA (Mayo Clinic faculty, ACP and ISIM representatives), speakers from India, Nepal, Bangladesh.  The poster and oral presentations were linked to local as well as general IM issues and were of good quality. The presenters were all very well prepared and displayed enthusiasm and knowledge of their topic. Many Past -presidents as well as faculty members from some of the 8 universities in Sri Lanka were present at the conference.
